Context
Pair project reproducing a typical data science assignment based on a food products database. It covered exploring and cleaning the data, producing charts and writing a report in English.
Goals
- Explore and clean a food products database.
- Extract the useful data and prepare it for analysis.
- Produce visualizations answering specific questions.
- Write a report in English presenting the approach and the results.
Implementation
Phase 1: exploration and cleaning
We explored the relevant fields with SQL queries, using LIMIT and OFFSET to
keep the displayed volume of data under control. Cleaning meant removing
duplicates and rows with impossible values, checking barcodes and nutritional
values, and adding derived fields to ease processing (organic, vegan…). The
retained data was stored in temporary tables, then exported to CSV.
Phase 2: visualization
We produced charts answering the questions asked about the food products, then interpreted the observed trends and compared them with the initial hypotheses.
Phase 3: report
We wrote a report in English detailing the exploration, cleaning and analysis, with a structured presentation of the charts and conclusions.
Results
The cleaned database made it possible to extract usable information and produce readable visualizations. The project showed me how much the cleaning phase shapes everything else: without it, charts tell stories about trends that do not exist.
